Elementary / Lower School
Teaches lower school at Hewitt and previously taught first grade at Riverdale Country School. She has recently earned her Masters in Literacy Birth-Grade 6 at Manhattanville College in Purchase, NY. She has a Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education and Psychology, and has had over 5 years of professional experience in K-2 classrooms. Michelle is responsible for leading her own small-guided reading groups to focus on instruction in decoding, comprehension, and phonics skills through multisensory approaches. Through her experience at Riverdale Country School, she has administered Fountas and Pinnell reading assessments to find students’ instructional and independent reading levels to best support them during independent and guided reading. She has worked closely with the Heinemann Reading and Writing Workshop curriculum to help students develop independence with targeted strategies. Michelle has had experience with teaching ELL students in various public school settings, working closely with 4th and 5th graders in their writing, as well as teaching fluency and decoding skills to 2nd graders. When she is not pursuing her passion for teaching literacy, Michelle loves to play piano, cook, and go for long jogs or walks through her neighborhood park.
